Our Curriculum
At OMJS, children connect to their Jewish identity, culture, and community in a pluralistic, welcoming environment. Our immersive approach blends Hebrew language, Jewish values, cultural celebrations, and intergenerational learning with the residents of Hillel Lodge. Students leave with a sense of belonging to the Jewish people—past, present, and future.
We offer five classes, each designed for a specific stage of growth:
JK–1: Sha’arim (Gateways)
Grades 2–3
Grades 4–5
Grades 6–7
Grades 8–9: TeenShemet
Sha’arim (JK–1)
Our youngest learners begin with Sha’arim—a warm, playful immersion into Hebrew and Jewish culture. Through songs, stories, movement, and hands-on projects, children start to recognize Hebrew words, experience holidays, and explore values like kindness and community. This foundation creates natural connections to Jewish life while encouraging curiosity and creativity. For more information, press here: https://omjs.ca/shaarim-jk-grade-1/
Judaic Curriculum (Grades 2–9)
OMJS provides a comprehensive K–9 program that combines Jewish values, holidays, and learning. Lessons are experiential and interactive—using art, music, discussions, and projects to bring Jewish culture and heritage to life. As a pluralistic school, we emphasize respect for the many ways Jews live and believe, ensuring that every student feels included.
Hebrew Curriculum (Grades JK–9)
Hebrew is woven into every level of the school.
- JK–2: Immersive ulpan-style learning introduces Hebrew words and phrases in a natural, playful way.
- Grades 3–9: A structured program builds decoding and reading skills, while continuing to grow vocabulary and conversational Hebrew.
This balance of immersive exposure and structured learning helps students feel comfortable and confident in Hebrew.
B’nai Mitzvah Program (Grade 6-7)
OMJS offers a group B’nai Mitzvah program that blends tradition with personal meaning. Over the year, students explore:
- Jewish values and their own personal beliefs
- The structure of synagogue services
- Family treasures and traditions
- Writing and presenting a D’var Torah
Students also receive private lessons to learn Torah reading and service leadership. The group ceremony is tailored to reflect each family’s values, with no rigid requirements—our goal is to help every student shine.
TeenShemet (Grades 8–9)
TeenShemet is a leadership and identity program for teens who want to stay engaged beyond the core curriculum. Meeting on Sundays, participants:
- Discuss Jewish identity, ethics, and current issues
- Develop leadership skills through guided projects
- Mentor younger students and earn recognized volunteer hours
- Take part in field trips, site visits, and community service
- Strengthen their sense of belonging in a supportive, pluralistic setting
TeenShemet helps students transition from learners to role models, continuing their growth as active members of the Jewish community. For more information, press here: https://omjs.ca/teenshemet-grades-8-9/
